Rituals : How to wake up in the Winter

Not sure if it’s just me, but I have been having a much harder time getting up in the morning this Winter.  While I am usually a morning person, the cold weather and dark mornings have made it a little harder to jump out of bed in the morning.  We’ve put together a list of a few tips that will kick start your morning routine – and maybe help you hit the snooze button one less time…

People often think of using diffusers in the evening to help them relax and sleep however that same diffuser by your bed can also help you wake up in the morning.  Citrus essential oils help to wake the brain up by influencing and activating the emotion centres of the brain and these citrus aromas are thought to help promote happiness and energy.  Some favourite essential oils for waking up in the morning are: Sweet Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon.

A Morning Diffuser Blend: ‘Good Morning Sunshine’

  • 7 Drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil
  • 9 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 10 Drops Lemon Essential Oil

We suggest you put your diffuser on with this blend after you hit snooze on your alarm.

 Yoga In Your Bed

Fatigue is often associated to lack of blood flow and while not all of us can do a morning yoga class before the office, 5 minutes of stretching in bed can actually have huge benefits for lengthening the muscles as well as helping to get the blood flowing throughout your body.  Start by peddling the feet to get the calve muscles engaged, then raise your arms up and then overhead and and stretch from one side to the side while taking deep breaths.

Lemon Water

Yes everyone says it but not enough of us are actually doing it.  Keep a glass of water beside your bed or have a large glass of lemon water within the first 20 minutes of waking.  Just do it, it is so good for you for waking up your digestion and your body.

Make your shower experience more of an experience.

Keep Peppermint Essential Oil and Eucalyptus Essential Oil in your shower and add 5 drops of each to your hand while showering and briskly rub your hands together.  The friction of rubbing the hands as well as the heat from the shower water will release the aroma and the fresh herbal scent of the peppermint will help wake up your senses while the eucalyptus helps to stimulate the respiratory system prompting deeper breathing and alertness.

Remind Yourself Of Your Goals

We have determined some simple physical ways of getting the body more awake however it is just as important to wake up the mind in the morning and set your focus for the day. Setting intentions and goals is important for long term vision but also get help get the body and brain motivated in the morning.  On 2 Post-it notes write your long term vision as well as your short term goal and post them to your bathroom mirror as a morning motivation.
